In The Arms Of Morpheus – An Ode for Max Ernst

This piece artwork is based on a set of work entitled ‘Forest’ produced by the Dada and Surrealist artist Max Ernst (1891-1976) in 1927.

Concept Comments (for you who may be interested)-

The underlining concept for this work has derived from several points of origin.

i. Cover Art - a play on the word ‘cover’ manipulated in the context, as in cover version. This work is the recycling a concept and the visual content of an existing piece of artwork.

ii. The visual concept - The use of the contemporary images employ to create the overall visual effect in this montage - exchanging the natural textures and forms of the forest in the original artworks with modern manmade structures, to form a concrete jungle.
iii. The Peach Moon – a play on the Big Apple.

iv. Subject Content - The Arms of Morpheus and the Dove (which are one of the same) is meant to be symbolic of the tranquillity and peace of being in slumber. The forest however is symbolic of the cold harsh realities of the nightmares that may never too far away.

v. Artwork Title – Based of the idea that the original Surrealist manifesto written in 1924 by André Breton and related primarily to poetry and literature, Max Ernst was one of the co signers of the manifesto.

This is a brilliant piece. It is simple in the concept yet complex in its components. Truly a grand work of art.
